Atty. Ma. Dorothea "Dot" Ramos Balasbas-Gancayco is a multifaceted Filipino lawyer, professor, media personality, and civic leader whose career spans law, education, public service, and advocacy. A graduate of the University of the Philippines - Diliman, where she earned both her Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Bachelor of Laws, she passed the Philippine Bar as well as the Professional and Sub-Professional Civil Service Examinations. Known as "The Singing Lawyer" and "Ang Kaibigang Abogada", she has combined her legal expertise with community service and media outreach to champion social causes.
She currently serves as President of Celebrity Sports Plaza, Inc., and as a Professor at New Era University, teaching Intellectual Property Law since 2016. Beyond academia, she hosts and produces the public service television program "Serbisyong Bayanihan" on UNTV 37, and has served as a legal consultant and lecturer on topics such as women's and children's rights, family law, and entertainment law for various TV and radio programs. Her civic leadership includes roles as Councilor of the ASEAN Intellectual Property Association of the Philippines, President of Kilusang Kontra Kovid (KILKOVID), President of Alyansa para sa Kalusugan ng Mamamayan (AKMA), and Trustee of the UP Women Lawyers' Circle (WILOCI). She also serves as Legal Consultant to Congresswoman Geraldine B. Roman and Committee Co-Chair of the Philippine Bar Association (PBA).
Atty. Dot has received numerous awards recognizing her professional excellence and public service. Among these are the University of the Philippines Distinguished Alumna Award for Community Empowerment (2024), Anak TV Award for Public Service Hosting (2024), Legal Aid Advocate Award (2024) from the IBP-QC, and Empowered Woman of the Philippines (2023). She has also earned multiple recognitions from the Aliw Awards, including Best Major Concert and Best Public Service Show, and accolades such as the Golden Wheel Award for Women Empowerment (2021) and Altiora Peto Award for Public Service (2021).
Her extensive organizational involvement includes leadership in the UP Concert Chorus Alumni Association (as President Emerita), Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA) Conference Committee, and Association of Congressional Chiefs of Staff, among others. As a lawyer and advocate, she promotes the rights of women, children, artists, and marginalized groups, providing free legal education and assistance, organizing medical and legal missions, and leading fundraisers for education and disaster relief.
Before her current roles, Atty. Dot served as Chief of Staff in the House of Representatives for multiple congressmen, including those from Bataan, Negros Oriental, and Benguet, and earlier worked as a Court Attorney in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, as well as Private Secretary to the late Former Supreme Court Associate Justice Emilio A. Gancayco. Her lifelong dedication to law, empowerment, and service has made her one of the most respected figures in both the legal and public service communities.
